The 64-year-old woman, who was arrested in connection with the incident involving a dog that bit a member of the public and a police officer, has been charged with two counts of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control, causing injury.

She is due to appear at York Magistrates' Court on 20 August.

An Alsatian-type dog had to be put down by a police firearms officer in Bedale.

Officers were alerted to the scene at 10.50pm on Friday (1 August 2025) by the man, who is aged in his 60s, after the initial biting incident.

He had been walking home from the pub on the Market Place when he was attacked by the dog near the bowling club.

Officers located the dog near the fire station at around 11.30pm and repeated attempts were made to bring it under control, during which a police officer was bitten.

The dog managed to get away and it was tracked down to Queen Annes Drive, off Firby Road, at 1.30am on Saturday.

With a vet due to take 25 minutes to arrive at the scene, a decision was made for a firearms officer to put the dog down due to serious public safety concerns.
