The Environment Agency has confirmed it has requested a short extension to the planning process for the long-awaited Tadcaster Flood Alleviation Scheme, following an objection and other concerns raised during the planning review.

In a statement, an Environment Agency spokesperson said:

“We remain fully committed to delivering a flood alleviation scheme that protects the people of Tadcaster from future flooding.

Following an objection and other concerns raised during the planning process, we’ve requested a short extension to allow time to review our application.

It is important that we take the time to address the issues raised and ensure the scheme has the best chance of securing planning consent, as we know how important this project is for the town."

The scheme had been expected to go before the council’s planning committee in October 2025. However, with new concerns emerging during the review period, the Environment Agency has now requested a three-month extension to allow for a detailed reassessment and potential revisions.

Officials say the delay will help ensure the project is robust and capable of gaining the planning consent required to move forward.

The flood alleviation scheme is considered vital in reducing the risk of future flooding in Tadcaster, which has previously suffered significant flood damage.
