Scarborough Reform Mayoress resigns from council year after election

THE Reform mayoress of a council in North Yorkshire has resigned, which could lead to a possible by-election.
Cllr Stacy Bolton, the Town Mayoress of Scarborough, has resigned from the Reform-led authority.
Cllr Bolton was one of two Reform members elected for the Castle division in the inaugural election for Scarborough Town Council in May 2024. Reform won 11 out of 15 seats overall.
Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), she said: “I stepped down due to a change in personal circumstances.”
According to her biography, Ms Bolton is “deeply committed to her community, she is passionate about supporting young people and helping Scarborough continue to grow and thrive for future generations”.
It adds: “As Mayoress, Stacy is proud to serve alongside the Mayor in representing the town and promoting the values of community, kindness, and opportunity. Her dedication, empathy, and optimism continue to guide her efforts to make Scarborough a welcoming and inspiring place for all generations.”
The authority’s town clerk said that if an election is called, it will take place no later than September 2, 2026.
In order for a by-election to take place, at least 10 residents in the Castle division would have to contact North Yorkshire Council by Monday, June 29.
Otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option.
Ms Bolton was a member of two committees: vice chair of the staffing committee and a member of the finance and projects committee.
Based on the minutes of meetings published on the town council’s website, she attended two out of four meetings of the staffing committee and one out of four of the finance and projects committee.
Ms Bolton also attended five out of 10 full council meetings, including extraordinary meetings.
