Selby MP Keir Mather is continuing his push to resolve persistent power cuts across the area.

Power outages have affected people across Selby, particularly during colder months when families rely on heating and electricity for essential needs.

Holding energy providers accountable

Mr Mather has been engaging with Northern Power Grid and escalating conversations with its CEO. He is also in contact with Energy Minister Michael Shanks to address the issues more broadly and advocate for reliable access to the energy grid.

He said: “Power cuts continue to affect people in our local area, disrupting lives and causing real inconvenience.

“At the end of the day, we're in one of the richest countries in the world. Our communities deserve reliable access to the grid, particularly during winter when interruptions can have serious consequences.”

The impact on residents

Mr Mather stressed that while power cuts inconvenience most, vulnerable groups, including those relying on medical equipment or heating, are hit hardest.

“There are people in our area who rely on power for their medical equipment or for heating their homes during cold weather.”

“Power cuts can deeply affect their lives and health. Together with my office, I’ve been working to direct people to Northern Power Grid’s priority service to ensure they can access emergency support when needed. But long-term solutions are essential to address these issues and provide peace of mind for residents.”

A spokesperson for Northern Powergrid said:

“We have identified and fixed the faults that were causing the immediate power cuts in the YO8 postcode area of Selby.

“Pockets of vegetation are still potentially causing interference with the overhead network, and we have since carried out aerial inspections via helicopter and assigned a dedicated manager and engineer to investigate further.

“We will be writing to affected customers in the new year as well as meeting with Keir Mather MP to provide an update on how we’re working to improve the reliability of the local power network.”
