Police shoot dog after serious attack in York

A man has been arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerous dog which is out of control causing injury

Emergency services were called to the Bellhouse Way area of York at around 3:15pm on Friday (5 December) following reports that several dogs were roaming loose in the street.

According to police, one of the animals, described as a large Alsatian-type dog, bit a member of the public on the leg, causing deep lacerations. The same dog then pursued a delivery driver in the area.

With the animal posing a serious risk, firearms officers were deployed. The road was closed while officers carried out a search to prevent further danger to the public.

The dog was located shortly afterwards on the driveway of a property. Police said it was visibly agitated and aggressive, prompting a firearms officer to shoot the animal on public safety grounds.

A man in his 50s has been arrested on suspicion of owning a dangerous dog that was out of control and caused injury. He remains in police custody.

The injured man required hospital treatment for the bite wound.

The road was reopened at approximately 4:30pm.
