Police in North Yorkshire are warning people to stay alert, after a man reportedly tried to scam someone by calling and pretending to be a detective.

The caller claimed to be a ‘Detective Morgan’ from Scarborough, and even gave a fake collar number.

He told the victim their bank card had been cloned and that someone had been arrested with their cloned card.

Officers say the same phone number has targeted other people in the Humberside area and North Yorkshire this week.

A North Yorkshire police spokesperson said: "Thankfully the victim recognised that it was a suspicious phone call and discontinued the call.

"We believe that had the victim continued to engage with the caller, that another scammer referred to as a “courier” would have been sent to their address to take their bank cards.

"Early investigative work shows that the number used by the fraudster to contact the victim has also been in contact with numerous other people in both the Humberside and North Yorkshire areas between the 17th and 23rd September.

"If you receive a call from someone passing these details, please do not engage with them and inform your local police either online or via 101.

"If you feel threatened or they call at your home, always call 999."
