Community mourns loss of bright and kind young girl
The family of Palwasha Akbar, aged 13, who tragically died after being rescued from the River Wharfe near Burnsall, has issued a heartfelt tribute to her.
"Palwasha was a bright, kind, and caring young girl whose tragic passing has left her family, friends, and community heartbroken," her family said.
She was a dedicated student with a love for learning and a cheerful personality that brought joy to those around her.
Palwasha was fond of reading, often found enjoying a good book, and loved spending time with her friends, creating memories, sharing laughter, and spreading happiness.
Her family described her as a loving daughter, sister, and friend with a bright future, full of ambitions and dreams.
Palwasha's tragic loss following the drowning incident in the River Wharfe has left a deep void in her family's lives, who are struggling to come to terms with losing such a cherished member.
"Palwasha will be remembered for her kindness, her beautiful spirit, her devotion to her friends and family, and the happiness she brought to those around her," the family added.
Her family has set up a fundraising page to honour her memory and support charitable causes in Palwasha's name, expressing gratitude for the generosity and kindness shown by the community.
On 31st May 2026, emergency services were called to the River Wharfe near Burnsall after a report of the missing girl in the water at around 6.30pm.
Despite rescue efforts and medical care, Palwasha was sadly pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital by air ambulance.
The family asked for respect for their privacy as they grieve, and community members are thanked for their assistance at the scene.
