Holgate residents return home after suspected historic munition found in York
Device safely destroyed in controlled explosion as police lift cordons and road closures
Residents in part of Holgate, York, have been allowed to return home after a suspected historic munition was discovered in a garage.
North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to the Windmill Rise area after the device was found, with Army experts attending to assess and make it safe.
As a precaution, a number of nearby homes were evacuated and roads including Acomb Road were closed while the operation was carried out.
Police have now confirmed the device was taken to a safe location and destroyed in a controlled explosion.
The cordons have since been removed and local residents have been able to return home, with the area now back to normal.
Police thanked residents for their patience and understanding while the safety operation was underway.
