Bird of prey euthanised due to injuries from shotgun pellets
Last updated 19th May 2026
Authorities are appealing for information following the discovery of a buzzard suffering from shotgun pellets in its wing in the Bransdale area.
The injured bird was found on 4th May 2026 with a broken leg and subsequently taken to a vet.
Unfortunately, due to the severity of its injuries, the buzzard had to be euthanised.
X-rays revealed shotgun pellets lodged in the bird's wing.
The broken leg may have resulted from a hard landing and is believed to have occurred up to 48 hours prior to the bird’s discovery, indicating it might have been shot within that timeframe.
Buzzards, as well as other birds of prey, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Intentionally harming such birds constitutes a criminal offence.
North Yorkshire Police are urging anyone who may have information about how the buzzard was injured to come forward.
Information can be provided by contacting North Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting reference 12260080894.
