Additional transport links set to boost local economy

Scarborough and Whitby MP Alison Hume has welcomed news that the Government is funding two additional daily train services between Scarborough and York.

In a statement she said: “I’ve long called for two trains and hour to run from Scarborough to York and from York to Scarborough and I’ll continue to do so.

“These extra services are a positive step forward towards unlocking Scarborough’s potential which, given the large employers, businesses, creativity and talent which exist here, is huge.

“I’ve campaigned hard to improve Scarborough’s links to the wider region, because poor transport has historically been one of the biggest barriers to fulfilling that potential we always talk about, so this is good news for the local economy.

“These trains are going to give people travelling regularly for work, education or leisure much-needed flexibility.

“I’m pleased this win has been announced, showing the benefits of having a Labour MP working collaboratively with a Labour Mayor and a Labour government.”

“Making us easier to reach will benefit the local economy and help others tap into the potential and know-how we have here.”

Currently, TransPennine Express operates one service per hour; however, the new additions promise greater flexibility for work, education, and leisure travel.

The extra services, embraced across party lines, are due to operate under Great British Railways framework—a reflection of the UK's move towards nationalised rail.

Scheduled train times include departures from Scarborough at 7.30am and 6.30pm, and departures from York at 6.35am and 5.35pm.
