Wrexham’s been shortlisted to become the UK City of Culture 2029 – putting it in the running for a ten-million-pound prize.

It’s one of four places to make the final shortlist, alongside Blackpool, Milton Keynes and Sheffield.

The winner will be announced in early 2027, with each shortlisted place receiving at least 125-thousand pounds to develop its bid.

Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock says Wrexham has “a huge amount to offer in heritage, culture and sport”.

He says winning the title could bring more investment, attract visitors and boost pride in the community.

Joanna Knight, chair of the Wrecsam2029 bid, says making the shortlist is “something our whole community should be immensely proud of”.

She says becoming the first Welsh UK City of Culture could bring huge opportunities for Wrexham, North Wales and the whole of Wales.
