Ken Skates MS unanimously confirmed as Welsh Labour leader
Skates takes the helm after Eluned Morgan's resignation
Ken Skates MS has been unanimously confirmed as Leader of Welsh Labour, following nominations from the Welsh Labour Senedd group. Skates initially became interim leader in May after Eluned Morgan stepped down from the role.
The nomination process for a permanent replacement began last Thursday, with the Welsh Labour Senedd Group backing Skates to continue as leader. All nine members unanimously nominated Skates.
Ken Skates MS expressed his gratitude: “I am deeply honoured to have the unanimous backing of my colleagues in the Senedd in seeking the leadership of Welsh Labour.”
Skates emphasized his long-lasting commitment to the party, stating he joined as a 14-year-old with the belief that children's futures shouldn't be dictated by their backgrounds. He highlighted the Labour movement as one centered on fairness, justice, security, and liberty.
In addition to his party duties, Skates has held several roles within the Welsh Government since his election in 2011, including positions as Transport Secretary and Economy and Infrastructure Secretary.
He was re-elected in May to represent the new constituency of Fflint Wrecsam.
Deputy leader Carolyn Harris MP congratulated Skates and assured her support: “I offer my warm congratulations to Ken. He has my full backing as he undertakes the big task ahead of him - listening, learning, rebuilding and doing that crucial job of holding Plaid Cymru, and Reform UK, to account in the Senedd.”
The Welsh Labour Senedd group anticipates Skates will bring energy, thoughtfulness, and optimism to their efforts moving forward.
