Students from The Nicholas Hamond Academy in Swaffham have used their creativity and digital skills to redesign their town's Market Place using Minecraft, as part of the Swaffham – A Historic Market Town project.

A group of 28 Year 7 pupils, aged 11 to 12, participated in three sessions throughout the year to explore ways to enhance the Market Place and make it more appealing for future generations.

The initiative began with a walking tour, where students assessed areas in need of improvement. Collaborating on a shared Minecraft map, they spent six hours developing ideas for greener spaces, new seating areas, water features, and refreshed paving.

Their innovative designs attracted the attention of LDA Design, landscape architects who engaged with the pupils during the final session, integrating their ideas into potential future plans for the town.

The students found the experience to be "educational," "creative," and "amazing," praising the opportunity to see their concepts represented in broader engagement efforts focusing on the town's development.

The Minecraft project is a segment of the wider Swaffham – A Historic Market Town initiative, which aims to empower locals to celebrate and sustain the town's heritage. Partners include Breckland Council, Historic England, The National Lottery Heritage Trust, Norfolk & Norwich Festival, and Swaffham Town Council.

Cllr Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economic Development & Growth, highlighted the value of the Minecraft project, stating: “The Minecraft project has helped us capture the opinions of Swaffham’s young people, ensuring they grow up in a town that reflects their aspirations and needs. Using Minecraft has given them the freedom to express their vision in a medium they truly understand, enjoy, and excel, and I can’t wait to see their ideas brought to life.”
