A 22-year-old man is to be sentenced later this year for the manslaughter of a 71-year-old grandfather in Norwich, after being assessed as suffering from schizophrenia.

Moses Fernandes had faced charges of murder for the death of Terry McFadyen, who was stabbed on 3rd November last year.

Court proceedings

In Norwich Crown Court, prosecutor William Carter announced Fernandes has been evaluated by three forensic psychiatrists, leading to a plea of manslaughter due to diminished responsibility being accepted.

Fernandes has been prescribed anti-psychotic medication since being remanded and remains on a hospital wing.

Mr McFadyen was found dead from stab wounds at his Layer Close address in Norwich. A post-mortem determined the cause of death as blood loss and hypovolemic shock, according to Norfolk Constabulary.

Paramedics were called when a man in his 20s reported breathing difficulties, and police were notified of an aggressive situation at 4.45am, leading officers to Mr McFadyen.

Fernandes, understood to be a lodger at the property, was arrested on suspicion of murder after being checked at a hospital for breathing problems and later discharged into custody.

Impact on family

Mr McFadyen's family expressed their heartbreak over his loss, describing him as a "kind, warm and gentle man who would do anything to help others."

Fernades' plea of manslaughter was recorded in April, and a postponed murder trial was due to begin Monday, before Mr Carter updated the court.

Judge Anthony Bate set Fernandes' sentencing for 24th September, pending further psychiatric evaluations.

Fernandes remains in custody until sentencing.
