A Norwich man has been sentenced to seven and a half years behind bars following a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a twin brother and left his sibling seriously injured.

Nicolae Brica, 48, pleaded guilty to causing death by due care while over the prescribed alcohol limit and causing serious injury by careless driving at Norwich Crown Court.

Brica was driving a Renault Megane in the early hours of Christmas Eve 2025 when he collided with the two brothers on Barrack Street as they were cycling home after socialising. One of the brothers died at the scene, while the other required emergency surgery.

After the collision, Brica was breathalysed and found to be over the legal limit, registering a roadside reading of 72 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath — double the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

Brica was arrested, charged, and later jailed for seven and a half years. He was also disqualified from driving for five years and must take an extended driving test before returning to the roads.

DC Dylan Thomas commented on the sentencing: "This was a truly devastating incident which has had a lifelong impact on this family. We hope today's sentence provides them with some measure of closure."

Brica's decision to drive after consuming alcohol had tragic results. District authorities urge all drivers to think carefully before getting behind the wheel after drinking.
