Norfolk County Council is ramping up efforts to attract more adopters and dispel misconceptions around adoption.

There are currently 23 children in Norfolk looking for new homes, and the council is actively working to add more approved adopters to their list. They hope this will also speed up the process for children entering the care system.

Wendy Atkinson, Lead Member for Children, Families and SEND, explained that the council is focused on improving visibility and challenging myths about who can adopt, emphasising that adoption is open to everyone.

Wendy says breaking misconceptions about adoption is crucial because it opens the door to a wider range of potential adopters.

Many people may wrongly assume they are not eligible to adopt due to factors like age, marital status, or financial situation.

" Adoption is open to everyone. You can be single, you don't have to own your own house, you don't have to have children already. It's essentially open to anyone that can offer that child a stable home and a loving home, " Wendy said.

By addressing these myths, the council hopes to encourage more people to pursue adoption, offering more children the chance to thrive in a supportive and loving home environment.

Wendy also told Greatest Hits that placing children in loving, stable family homes is crucial for their development and well-being.

"you can be the one that can help them come through this and come and be productive members of society, which is what we want for everyone" she said.

The council has organised events, organised to inform and encourage individuals to consider adoption, with one taking place at Morrisons in Bradwell this week, offering attendees the chance to engage directly with the adoption team.

Wendy hopes that these increased efforts will encourage people to think for themselves and do their own research into adoption, rather than making assumptions.
