A 34-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the rape of a teenage girl on Great Yarmouth beach, as well as two counts of sexual assault.

Norfolk Police began investigations following reports of two girls being raped on South Beach Parade in the early hours of 16th May.

Madalin Ilinca, a Romanian national, faced Norwich Magistrates’ Court on charges related to the rape and sexual assaults, which allegedly occurred in Great Yarmouth between 15th and 16th May.

The complainant in both counts of sexual assault is reported to be a woman aged 16 or over.

Court proceedings

Ilinca, residing on Stafford Road, Great Yarmouth, attended court dressed in a cream-coloured hoody, clasping his hands, and exhibiting emotional distress.

He was not asked to enter pleas and was remanded into custody without bail application. Assisted by an interpreter via video link, Ilinca is scheduled for a court appearance at Norwich Crown Court on 6th July.

Norfolk Police noted Ilinca's interception at the port of Dover upon re-entering the UK before he was charged.

Ongoing inquiries

A second man in his 30s, arrested in Northamptonshire on 17th May on suspicion of rape related to the same incident, remains on bail until 10th August as inquiries continue.
