Cromer charity worker to walk 23 miles for North Norfolk Foodbank
Local foodbank to fundraise money and celebrate Cromer Pier's 125th birthday
A charity worker from North Norfolk is preparing to walk more than 23 miles around Cromer Pier to raise money and awareness for North Norfolk Foodbank.
Jamie Payne, the Foodbank Liaison Officer, will undertake the challenge as part of the pier's 125th anniversary celebrations.
He plans to complete 125 laps of Cromer Pier, with 15 kilos on his back:
"I'm also going to do it carrying a 15 kilo rucksack on my back to simulate the weight of a standard emergency food parcel that we give to people in North Norfolk in crisis" said Jamie.
Each lap of the pier measures 300 metres, making the entire challenge approximately 37.5km (23.3 miles).
North Norfolk Foodbank, part of the Trussell Trust network, provides vital support to people across North Norfolk.
In the past year, North Norfolk Foodbank distributed over 2,000 emergency food vouchers, aiding more than 4,500 individuals, including over 1,600 children. But this year might be their hardest yet:
"Nobody's immune to the cost of living. That is naturally going to drive more people to food banks, not just here in North Norfolk, but across the country all year,
We will at times buy products for our food parcels because donations will reduce, and peoples purse strings are tightened" Jamie said.
The sponsored walk is set to begin at 7:00am on 8th June 2026 and will conclude with Cromer Pier's 125th birthday celebrations, featuring events on the pier and promenade from 4:00pm to 7:00pm.
This event is particularly important to Jamie:
"I'm a Cromer boy, born and bred. I've lived in the town all my life. So I've grown up with Cromer Pier, so in my own little way, this is my own little birthday present to it, and I'm going to spend its birthday with it."
