A woman in her 50s has died following a suspected hit-and-run in Sunderland.

The incident took place shortly before 11pm last night (Saturday 14th February 2026), when the pedestrian was crossing Durham Road in the Farringdon area of the city.

She was struck by a vehicle, believed to be a dark-coloured 4x4 traveling east.

The driver left the scene without stopping.

Emergency services attended, but sadly the woman was pronounced dead.

Her family has been informed and are being supported by officers.

Durham Road was closed for a period to allow police to conduct enquiries, but it has now reopened.

Northumbria Police's Roads Policing unit is asking for anyone with information to come forward.

They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has dashcam or doorbell footage from the area at the time of the collision.
