The Discovery Museum in Newcastle is set to host a unique after-hours event showcasing Vera’s iconic costume alongside a Q&A session with the character’s creator, Ann Cleeves.

The event, titled "Discovery Nights: Wonder Women," is inspired by International Women's Day and will take place on Friday 6th March from 6-9 pm.

The evening plans to celebrate women linked to the North East region, highlighting both historical and contemporary achievements.

Tickets are priced at £10, and an array of drop-in activities are planned for attendees throughout the evening.

Visitors can sketch costumes from notable figures such as South Tyneside author Catherine Cookson and global fashion icon Louise Trotter, originally from Sunderland.

Kylea Little, Keeper of History at the Discovery Museum, said:

“Vera’s costume has never been seen by the public before.

To have it out on display for the first time alongside Ann Cleeves who created the character is particularly special to us, and, we hope, the people who come to the event.

We’re very grateful to Ann for joining us.

The Discovery Nights events have been running for over a year now and have created a warm, thoughtful community, with people taking things at their own pace.

Whether it’s to explore the galleries or mingle and meet friends with a drink, chill on a solo trip, or stroll about dipping in and out of activities we want people to relax and have fun.”

Ann Cleeves will give a reading followed by a Q&A session.

Known for 39 critically acclaimed novels, Cleeves's works have become international bestsellers and have been translated into over 20 languages.

Additionally, attendees can enjoy live music tasters from Kirsty Hall, try proggy mat making, and watch a performance by the all-women drum group Bangshees.

There will also be talks on notable women such as trailblazing engineer Rachel Parsons and wartime doctor Irene Ighodaro.

Tyne & Wear Archives will display historical material showcasing the varied lives of women in the region.

A book swap, bar, pizza, and nachos will be available at the museum café.
