Teen in critical condition after crash on A1 near Stannington
Five people hospitalised following collision involving two cars and a lorry
A teenager is in critical condition after a severe crash on the A1 near Stannington that left several others injured.
The accident, which occurred around 4pm yesterday (Wednesday 3rd June), involved a blue BMW 320 M Sport, a red Seat Leon, and a white IVECO lorry travelling southwards between Stannington and Blagdon.
Four others were hurt in the crash, with five people taken to hospital for head and body injuries.
The road has been closed in both directions between Stannington Station and Seaton Burn and remains shut this morning (Thursday 4th June).
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and follow diversion routes while the road closure is in effect.
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they responded to the incident shortly after 4.10pm, deploying three ambulances, a duty officer, a specialist paramedic, and a clinical team leader to treat and transport the casualties.
Police have urged witnesses or anyone with pertinent information, including dash cam footage, to come forward.
