The body of a missing Sunderland teenager has been identified, police can today confirm.

Steven Snowdon, aged 19, was last seen on August 27 last year and was spoken to on the phone on August 29.

Northumbria Police issued an appeal for information to locate Steven in the days after he was last seen.

On Tuesday, February 17, human remains were found off Mulberry Way in the Houghton-le-Spring area.

Following forensic analysis and further search activity in the area in recent weeks, officers can today confirm that they are the body of Steven. There are believed to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

His next of kin have been informed.

Detective Inspector Nick Went, of Northumbria Police’s Missing Investigation Team, said: “This is an extremely sad conclusion to the search for Steven and our thoughts are firmly with his family and friends at this devastating time.

“I would like thank all of the officers who carried out enquiries to try and locate him, as well as the many people in our communities who shared our appeal for information.

“As is customary, a report into Steven’s death will now be prepared for the coroner.”
