Durham County Council has committed to conducting speed surveys on Genesis Way in Consett following a community plea to reduce the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph.

Campaigners argue that lowering the limit would enhance safety for both residents and road users, particularly at the Berry Edge Estate junction, which they describe as hazardous.

A petition supporting the plea states the change could decrease the chances of accidents, improve stopping distances, and give drivers more time to react to unexpected hazards.

It also emphasises that conditions would become safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users while improving visibility and decision-making at junctions and residential access points.

However, the council has indicated that implementing a 30mph limit might not be the best solution.

Councillor Kenny Hope, representing Reform for Delves Lane, stated:

“To turn the road from a 40 into a 30 is probably not the best option, so we’re going to do some surveys and see what we can implement to make that road safer.”

The recent crash that partly triggered the plea was reportedly due to a medical incident rather than speeding.

Kieron Moralee, strategic traffic manager for Durham County Council, said:

“We appreciate the concerns of residents and drivers and, working with them, we will be carrying out speed and traffic surveys to gather data.

“Once this is completed, we will outline next steps and consider additional measures if we feel they are appropriate.”
