The Shields Ferry has been temporarily suspended due to storm damage on its north landing.

Nexus has put the temporary closure in place as a precautionary measure, while urgent structural repair works take place.

The damage occurred during Storm Chandra on Tuesday 27 January.

Nexus say this temporary closure is in place as a precautionary measure and the Ferry will remain suspended until these works are complete.

We're told a bus replacement is currently operating to and from each Ferry landing and Ferry tickets are also being accepted on Metro services.

John Souter, Head of Customer Service Operations at Nexus, said: “This closure is a precautionary measure in the interest of public safety.

“A detailed inspection of the landing has determined that it requires urgent repairs. It’s not possible to have the landing in use until these works have been completed.

“The repairs need to be undertaken by specialist maritime engineers and we are working with them to get this arranged as soon as possible.

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers.”
