An investigation's underway into reports of sexual assault in Tynemouth - where a group of teenage girls were targeted by a man at the beach.

Shortly before 5pm on Saturday (May 23), it was reported that a man approached a group of teenage girls on King Edward's Bay.

It is alleged the man made a number of inappropriate comments including asking the group for sex before placing his hands on one of them.

Extensive enquiries have been ongoing since the report was first made, and a 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault a short time later.

He has been released on police bail with strict conditions – including not to visit any North Tyneside beaches - pending further enquiries.

Today, officers are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information that could assist enquiries to come forward.
