A second teenager has died following a collision in Sunderland.

Just after 11pm on Monday (November 24), police received a report of a collision involving a dark yellow Vauxhall Corsa on the A19 northbound, between the B1404 at Seaham and the A690 Herrington Interchange.

It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, the Corsa has left the carriageway and then been involved in a collision.

The male driver of the Corsa and the female passenger were found to have sustained serious injuries in the collision and despite the efforts of paramedics, the girl, aged 17, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries following the collision. Sadly, he passed away in hospital on Saturday (November 29).

Officers continue to appeal to any witnesses to the incident to contact them.

Sergeant Christopher Herron, of Northumbria Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said:

“This is an extremely sad update.

“Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the two young people who have tragically died in this incident.

“The investigation into the collision remains ongoing and we continue to appeal to anybody who may have information which could assist us to get in touch if they have not already done so.

“Your information – no matter how small or insignificant you feel it may be – could prove vital as we look to ascertain exactly what happened in this incident.”

Those with information regarding the collision can send Northumbria Police a DM on social media or use the live chat or report forms on the Force’s website.
