A footbridge at Whitley Bay Metro Station has reopened after being out of service for three years due to storm damage.

The structure, a listed footbridge at the North Tyneside Metro station, was damaged during Storm Otto in October 2023.

Passengers began using the restored bridge on Monday, although completion of the works had initially been scheduled for May.

The restoration work included structural repairs, new decking, handrails, improved accessibility features, and a full repaint.

Whitley Bay Station, part of the Metro network since 1980 and a listed site since 1986, serves around 1.2 million passenger journeys annually.

The restoration has also benefited a heritage railway in Northumberland, which received a donation of surplus materials for its own restoration work.
