Northumbria Police have slammed the behaviour of a man who parachuted from the Tyne Bridge on Sunday night - saying it's irresponsible and dangerous

The bridge had to be closed for a while - and the man, in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance.

No one was injured, and the man has been released on bail.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 11.50pm on Sunday (May 17), we received a report of concern for the welfare of an individual on the Tyne Bridge in Newcastle.

“Officers attended and it transpired that someone was parachuting from the bridge, which subsequently had to be closed for a short period.

“Upon landing, the man was arrested on suspicion of intentionally/recklessly causing a public nuisance. The 30-year-old has since been released on bail.

“While no injuries were reported, this type of conduct is wholly irresponsible.

“We strongly condemn the reckless actions of the individual, whose behaviour posed a significant risk not only to their own safety but also to members of the public and responding emergency services.”
