Vulnerable residents in Northumberland are being urged to reach out to the council this winter - to make sure their homes are safe.

The County Council is encouraging eligible residents in Northumberland to apply for a free gas safety check.

The Council is offering a grant of up to £500 to replace, repair, or service dangerous, faulty, or inefficient gas boilers, fires or cookers which can pose safety risks to vulnerable people in their homes.

Funding is limited and is being offered on a first come first served basis to residents that live in privately owned accommodation and who have a household income no greater than £36,000 per year or have a disability.

Councillor Gordon Stewart, Cabinet Member for Public Safety, said: “The safety of our residents is a top priority, and we know that gas-related hazards can pose significant risks in the home.

"We want to ensure that everyone can live safely and independently in their homes without the worry of dangerous appliances.

“I would encourage anyone who is eligible to get in touch to see what the team can do to help support you in your home."

The fund is being administered by the County Council and provided by Foundations Independent Living Trust through the Gas Safe Charity.

Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are at the discretion of the Warmer Homes team.
