Newcastle United and city council launch new initiative to support mental health
Football-themed benches aim to encourage open conversations
A unique initiative aimed at encouraging residents to speak more openly about their mental health has been launched by Newcastle United and Newcastle City Council.
The ‘One of Our Own’ project sees 11 public benches, adorned with black-and-white stripes and thought-provoking questions, strategically placed in communities and parks across Newcastle.
These benches are designed to transform casual football-related conversations into deeper discussions about personal wellbeing.
This comes at a time when suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the region.
Each bench is equipped with QR codes that connect users to crucial mental health support networks.
One such resource is the Newcastle United Foundation’s Be A Game Changer initiative, which offers over 20,000 hours of mental health and wellbeing support through various programmes.
Dan Burn, Newcastle United player and Foundation ambassador, highlighted the importance of the initiative.
“Football, particularly in this city, has a unique power to spark conversation and bring people together,” Burn said.
He emphasised the benches as an opportunity to initiate critical conversations: “These benches are a brilliant way to encourage people to take a minute, sit down, and have those important conversations."
Pam Smith, Chief Executive at Newcastle City Council, echoed Burn's sentiments, saying, “We are delighted to team up with Newcastle United to support Geordie football fans to take care of their mental health and each other."
Smith added that the benches serve as conversation starters, complementing the Wellbeing Hubs Network across the city.
She stressed the importance of connection in maintaining wellbeing: “We know how powerful football is to a united Newcastle. Nobody should have to face life’s challenges on their own."
Smith encouraged anyone struggling to reach out to the support streams available.
