Newcastle City Council has decided to abolish the Late Night Levy, providing financial relief for hospitality businesses that have been contributing to the city's nighttime economy through extra charges.

The decision follows feedback from local businesses and NE1, Newcastle's Business Improvement District company, as well as extensive consultation with police and licensees.

Introduced in 2013, the Levy was seen as outdated, no longer reflecting the city's diverse and experience-led late-night scene.

Stephen Patterson, Chief Executive of NE1, expressed his delight at the council’s decision, stating that removing the levy provides much-needed relief and a solid foundation for future collaboration with stakeholders to support the sector's growth.

Colin Ferguson, leader of Newcastle City Council, emphasised the council’s ongoing commitment to nighttime safety measures, noting that the repeal of the levy would not affect their focus on public safety.

Overall, the repeal has been well-received by the local hospitality industry, with various representatives expressing gratitude and optimism for future cooperation with the council.
