NE1’s Screen on the Green to return to Newcastle this summer
One of Newcastle’s most beloved summertime attractions is gearing up for a grand return this June. NE1’s Screen on the Green, the free open-air cinema experience at Old Eldon Square in the heart of the city, will begin on June 30th and run until the end of August.
Get the strawberries and cream ready, as Screen on the Green starts by serving up two weeks of Wimbledon action, bringing all the Grand Slam excitement into the heart of the city. The sporting spectacle continues in July with the 112th Tour de France, with elite cyclists battling it out for the prestigious yellow jersey.
NE1’s signature deck chairs will be lined up, ready for viewers to sit back and enjoy the on-screen sporting action. Perfect for settling in to enjoy all the nail-biting sporting competition, or to take a quick lunch break in the sun.
The official Screen on the Green movie schedule begins on Monday, 21st July, at the start of the school summer holidays, with at least two films screened each day, at 12 noon and 3 pm, until 31st August. Over 100 free films will feature in the line-up, ranging from iconic family classics to brand-new blockbusters.
For younger viewers, Tuesdays will be devoted to Toddler Takeovers with weekly 10:30am screenings of short animated films, perfect for little ones and their families. Headlining each week will be a film adaptation of one of Julia Donaldson’s amazing children’s stories, including the latest release, Tiddler. To welcome young guests, a free juice drink will be offered on arrival.
On Wednesday evenings, the Tyneside Cinema will again be hosting its Tyneside Takeovers. Starting at 6pm each week, these special screenings will showcase six films that capture the essence of the Tyneside Cinema experience, each hand-picked by the city’s much-loved independent cinema. Blockbuster Thursdays will also return this summer with big-screen, chart-toppers - a perfect attraction for the post-work crowd.
To celebrate the end of another successful Screen on the Green summer, NE1 will host a wrap party on the closing weekend of the 30th and 31st August, featuring entertainment and fun for all the family. To make the event even more special, NE1 is running a competition to encourage viewers to pick their favourite film. Four lucky winners will be picked at random, and their chosen films will be screened during the final weekend celebrations.
