Officers have launched a murder investigation after a man died following an assault in a Newcastle street.

At 10.50pm yesterday, police received a report of a disturbance on Drysdale Crescent in the Brunswick Village area of Newcastle.

It was reported that a number of people were involved in an altercation in the street.

Emergency services attended and found that one of the men – aged in his 50s – had sustained life-threatening injuries in the incident.

Despite the efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin are aware and are being supported by officers.

A woman in her 50s was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident and has since been discharged.

Officers with Northumbria Police’s Major Investigation Team have launched a full investigation and a man aged 43 and a woman aged 40 have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

A man aged 38 and another woman, also aged 40, have also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

All are currently in police custody.

Detective Inspector Barry McAtominey, of the Major Investigation Team, said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the man who has died.

“Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and we have four people in custody for questioning around what took place yesterday evening.

“Although our investigation is at an early stage, we do believe that those involved were known to each other.

“We remain in the area to carry out enquiries and also reassure those in the local community. If you do have concerns, please approach an officer on duty.”

Det Insp McAtominey added: “I would appeal to anyone with information regarding the incident to contact us.

“Your information, even if you believe it to be insignificant, could prove vital to helping us piece together the events that led up to the victim’s death.”
