Metro lines near Newcastle Airport closing for nine-day upgrade
Track and station improvements are planned on major Metro routes
Metro services between South Gosforth and Newcastle Airport will be suspended for nine days starting from this Saturday (15/08) as essential modernisation works commence.
Operator Nexus has detailed a comprehensive programme that aims to rejuvenate pivotal aspects of the Metro infrastructure, emphasising the necessity for these upgrades in safeguarding the long-term reliability of the service.
The multi-million-pound project will see significant enhancements, including track renewal and the revamping of several stations: Callerton Parkway, Bank Foot, Kingston Park, Fawdon, and Wansbeck Road. These upgrades are expected to improve not only the safety but also the aesthetic appeal of the stations, contributing to a more pleasant commuting experience.
In addition to station improvements, the plan includes essential cable repairs and extensive lineside estate management. Nexus will employ heavy machinery, including tamper and rail grinders, over the course of the operation, with work continuing around the clock.
Paul Welford, Major Projects Director at Nexus, stated that the renewal work along the Metro's Green line is crucial for ensuring the system's future resilience.
Welford apologised for any inconvenience the closure might create but highlighted the timing's strategic planning during the school holidays to minimise disruption and enhance efficiency.
"We are carrying out a major programme of renewal work right along Metro’s Green line between South Gosforth and Airport from this Saturday for nine consecutive days," Welford said.
"The range of work we are carrying out is vital for Metro’s long-term future. In many cases, there will be large numbers of workers on track and heavy machinery and rail maintenance vehicles will be in use. We’ll be working 24/7 to get the work completed."
Customers are advised to plan ahead and allocate extra time for their travel routes. Nexus aims to ensure smooth transport and has arranged a replacement bus service to operate during the closure, linking the affected Metro stations.
The ÂŁ7.94 million project includes significant improvements at Regent Centre interchange, carried out by contractor Kier. The project will not only remove the large metal canopy over the station's roadway but will also transform the concourse, modernise the platforms, and enhance customer experience with clearer signage and a new retail space.
