Matthias Jaissle named Newcastle head coach following Eddie Howe's departure
German coach joins Magpies with renowned pedigree and vision for future
Newcastle United have appointed Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach after Eddie Howe stepped down from the role last Friday following nearly five years in charge.
Jaissle, 38, arrives at St James' Park from Al-Ahli, confirmed with significant compensation reportedly exceeding £9 million.
Jaissle's track record includes leading RB Salzburg to consecutive Austrian titles and guiding Al-Ahli to clutch successive Asian Champions League victories.
His arrival follows Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund’s acquisition of controlling shares in four Pro League clubs, including Al-Ahli, in 2023.
Expressing his eagerness, Jaissle commented on the unique history and fan base of Newcastle, as well as the club's ambition and vision, which he followed with keen interest in recent years.
Newcastle's chief executive David Hopkinson announced Jaissle as the clear candidate after a rigorous selection process, highlighting his enthusiasm and potential as a young coach.
Following Howe's departure in a challenging 2025-26 season, derailed by key player exits, Jaissle faces revitalising the squad's composition and steering Newcastle ahead of their Premier League opener against Liverpool on 23rd August.
With key departures including Kieran Trippier, Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and potential captain Bruno Guimaraes leaving for Arsenal, Jaissle aims to stabilize the team and build upon the restored connection between fans and the club initiated under Howe.
Jaissle is optimistic about Newcastle's direction, recognizing the strong leadership and promising platform available for future development.
