North East campaigner calling on government to ban junk food outside advertisement
It is one month since the junk food advertisement ban came into force.
A North East junk food campaigner is calling on the government to go further and ban junk food outdoor advertisement, not just ones on the television.
It is a month on since the junk food advertisement rules came into force to combat childhood obesity.
The recent regulations mean adverts for less healthy food and drinks are banned on television before 9pm and online at all times.
Edda, 16, a young 'Bite Back' activist based in Gateshead said: "There is no need for junk food giants to be advertising their products on things like bus stops, billboards and telephone boxes while the health of a generation is in crisis.
"As junk food ads disappear from our screens, all these giant companies are going to do is put more ads onto our streets.
"Flooding the places where we live and the areas around our schools, our city centres with the very food which is making us ill.
"I believe a government that has claimed they want to raise the healthiest generation ever, should be pulling out all the stops to protect child health.
"The reality is that this ban is the bare minimum."
