An investigation has started after a 16-year-old girl died following a collision in Gateshead.

Northumbria Police were called to Lobley Hill Road, close to the junction with Schoolhouse Lane, at about 10.40pm on Friday 12 June.

Paramedics told officers that a girl had been struck by a silver Ford Fiesta.

She was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries, but died a short time later.

As part of the force's investigation, a man aged 19 has been questioned on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detectives are asking for anyone who may have seen what happened in the moment’s leading up to the teenager being struck by the vehicle to get in touch with their information.
