The big day is here for thousands of runners taking on the world's most iconic half marathon
The Great North Run is upon us... with thousands of runners expected to take on the world's most iconic half marathon today, from Newcastle city centre, to South Shields.
With 63,000 runners taking part on Sunday in what will be the 45th edition of the Great North Run, this year will be the biggest ever staging of the event.
Organisers say the Great North Run is about regional pride, ordinary people doing extraordinary things, it’s about heart.
Since 1981, the world’s greatest half marathon has brought people together - from first timers to all timers and once in a life timers, from charities to fundraisers and costume wearers, from famous faces to world-beaters and true local legends.
Bosses tell us how over 45 years it has created milestones and moments that stay with people for life, inspiring generation after generation, connecting people through a shared sense of belonging, resilience and achievement.
With the Tyne Bridge undergoing major restoration and only one footway open, spectators will not be able to congregate on the Tyne Bridge and will need to find alternative places to cheer runners on. Marshalls will be in place to ensure the footway is kept clear for people crossing the river.
Cllr Colin Ferguson, Leader of Newcastle City Council said: “The Great North Run is the sporting highlight of the year and we are incredibly proud to host the start in Newcastle.
“Each year it gets bigger and better, and we look forward to welcoming all the runners and their supporters on what will be a fantastic weekend for the city.
“Once again, our Tyne Bridge will play a key part as 63,000 runners are expected to make this iconic crossing. With the restoration works taking place, as well as improvements to central motorway, we have worked closely with the organisers to ensure this is another successful event.
“I wish everyone taking part good luck.”
Meanwhile, the ballot for the 2027 run is now open... until the 20th of September.
The event’s profile and popularity continues to grow, with organisers expecting a record number of ballot entries for 2027.
Paul Foster, Chief Executive of the Great Run Company said,
“Since that first Great North Run in 1981, we’ve had over 1.4 million finishers. 2027 will see us surpass the 1.5 million milestone – will you be that lucky person?
"Being a Great North Run finisher is an enviable club to be part of and we wish everyone good luck with their ballot application.
"For those who are aren’t successful, they will have another chance to secure ballot entry in January, or via one of the many charities who offer places to run our great event.”
