The demolition of the long-closed Gateshead Highway Flyover is set to begin in April 2026, with the process expected to continue until October.

The crumbling concrete structure, which sparked major safety concerns and has been empty since December 2024, is finally set for removal after nearly two decades of discussions about regenerating the surrounding town centre.

Council engineers and contractors anticipate a complex six-month operation, with demolition contractors BAM revealing their plans for this significant project.

The removal of the neighbouring Computer House office block is scheduled for completion in the coming weeks, with the final stage involving heavy machinery brought in from Scotland.

Demolition will first target the on and off ramps of the central section, supported by the installation of 40 pairs of heavy steel props, followed by further dismantling in other sections throughout summer.

Metro service along the Tyne was previously suspended in 2024 due to flyover collapse concerns; however, current plans indicate the Metro lines will remain operational, monitored closely with installed equipment alerting Nexus and council to any unusual movement.

Anneliese Hutchinson, strategic director for economy, innovation, and growth at Gateshead Council, highlighted the challenges faced during demolition preparations:

"This has been so complicated. We are in the middle of a busy city centre, we need to try and keep the Metro running, keep the roads running, and make sure people can still get into work. It is also a really complicated structure to demolish."

Gateshead Council has allocated £18 million for the demolition efforts, supplemented by £2.5 million from the North East Combined Authority.

Further government assistance is anticipated to support ongoing regeneration once the flyover is dismantled.

Scott Beattie, operations manager at BAM, emphasised the approach to the demolition:

"In April we will begin the main demolition of the Gateshead Highway flyover. Safety and minimising disruption are at the heart of our approach. We’re installing protective screens, have established dedicated haul roads, and put in place robust traffic and pedestrian management plans."

With local leadership and dedicated partners, the Gateshead Flyover demolition marks an essential step towards fresh developments and rejuvenation for the town centre.
