County Durham farmer explains impact of wet weather

A County Durham farmer tells us how the wet weather is impacting lambing season.

They say if the persistent rain continues, then it could prove to be challenging for farmers.

Richard Laing is from East Grange Farm in Durham and says they have about 320 sheep and expecting over 550 lambs.

He said: "The sheep don't mind the wet and they don't mind the cold, but they don't like the cold and the wet, because once the wet gets in and it gets cold, they just start struggling and really go backwards.

"So, if it doesn't dry up when they go out, they're not really going to like it at all. They might start getting a bit poorly.

"We're quite fortunate we lamb inside and we have plenty of space to turn the sheep out into.

"So, it's not affected us too badly yet, but when it's time to turn the sheep out, if it's still as wet as it is, it's going to be a bit of a challenge.

"Luckily, we do have a lot of shed space to fit all of them in, but the same as anything, they get a bit of cabin fever when they want to be out, they want to be out."
