A 19-year-old e-bike rider has admitted killing a great-grandmother on a pedestrian crossing in Sunderland.

Billy Stokoe pleaded guilty to causing the death of Gloria Stephenson, 86, when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday.

Police have said Mrs Stephenson was hit by a black Sur-Ron electric motorbike as she was using a zebra crossing on the B1286 Burdon Road, near the junction with Lidcombe Close, on May 16 last year.

Emergency services attended but Mrs Stephenson, from the Silksworth area of Sunderland, died at the scene.

On Thursday, Judge Robert Adams bailed Stokoe, of Sunderland, ahead of his sentencing on May 15.

The judge ordered a pre-sentence report to be prepared, telling the defendant: "All options will be open to the court on the next occasion."

After her death, Mrs Stephenson's family issued a tribute, saying they were "devastated at the loss of our vibrant, active, beautiful and intelligent mam, grandma, mother-in-law and great grandma".

They added: "She was active, fit, healthy and had years left to give her love and share her energy and zest for life with everyone who knew her."

Stokoe will be sentenced on the 15th of May
