Officers are appealing for information following a fatal collision in North Tyneside.

At 9pm yesterday police received a report of a collision on Preston Road North in Tynemouth.

It was reported that a black Volkswagen Scirocco was travelling northbound when it has collided with a bicycle.

Emergency services attended the scene – where it was found the rider of the bicycle – a man – had sustained life threatening injuries.

They were taken to hospital for treatment, however despite the efforts of medical staff they were pronounced dead a short time later.

Their next of kin have been informed and continue to receive support from officers.

A 41-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, while a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Both men remain in police custody at this time.

A section of the road was closed following the collision and has since been reopened.

Officers from the Force’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) have since launched an investigation in an attempt to understand the full circumstances leading up to the collision.

They are especially keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and may have CCTV or dashcam footage.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of SCIU, said: “This is an incredibly tragic incident in which someone has sadly lost their life.

“Our thoughts remain firmly with their loved ones, and we will continue to offer them with any support they may need.

“Our investigation is very much underway and now, we’re appealing for anyone who may have been in the area to get in touch.

“We know this can be a busy stretch of road connecting the coastline.

“If you were in the area or have any information that might help with our investigation – please get in touch.”
