Crakehill Bank road closure possible due to accelerated subsidence
Cabinet to discuss permanent closure of C31 Crakehill Bank in Hamsterley
The C31 Crakehill Bank in Hamsterley is facing a potential permanent closure due to extensive subsidence and embankment failure.
Since 2022, the road has been closed as authorities explored repair options through geotechnical investigations. However, despite the allocation of £1.7 million for repairs, accelerated slippage has led to increased repair costs estimated at over £10 million, with no assurance of stability due to groundwater proximity.
In light of public safety concerns, proposals to close the highway permanently under section 116 of the Highways Act 1980 will be discussed. If approved, the closure would involve removing a road section, regrading the embankment, and repairing the culvert to reduce stress on the bank.
C31 Crakehill Bank's current diversion route would become permanent, with required maintenance, revised markings, and additional signage introduced.
Cllr Tim McGuinness has emphasized the difficulty of the decision, citing the inability to guarantee road safety and stability.
The Cabinet will review the proposals on 15th September.
