Restrictions at Blyth Beach as pollution investigation continues
Environment Agency samples suggest creosote contamination
The Environment Agency, Northumberland County Council, and Port of Blyth are working together on the pollution issues at Blyth Beach, linked to creosote contamination.
The investigation includes examining past industrial land use in the region to determine the potential source of the pollution.
Precautionary measures have been put in place, with land and bathing restrictions in the affected zone, located north of the Dave Stephens Centre.
For safety, the Hole in the Wall entrance to the beach is also temporarily restricted while further investigations are carried out.
Fortunately, initial water samples show that the bathing area south of the Dave Stephens Centre remains unaffected.
The authorities acknowledge the inconvenience these restrictions pose for residents, visitors, and local businesses, and pledge to provide updates as more information surfaces.
Visitors to Blyth Beach are urged to adhere to all posted signage and advice to ensure public safety.
