The A19 is currently closed both southbound and northbound between multiple junctions due to an ongoing incident.

Northumbria Police has announced the road closures and advised motorists to expect delays and use alternative routes.

The affected areas are:

• A19 northbound: closed from A690 (both on-slip and off-slip) up to A183 junction.

• A19 southbound: closed from A1231 (both on-slip and off-slip) down to A690 junction.

• A183 westbound: closed from Hastings Hill roundabout. Vehicles can proceed eastbound on A183 towards Sunderland, but the closure prevents right turns crossing the westbound overbridge. Pedestrian access on the closed westbound section of the roundabout is also restricted.

The A1231 on-slip remains open for vehicles travelling southbound on the A19, but traffic cannot continue further south beyond the A1231 junction.

Police officers are on-site as investigations continue. Drivers in the area are encouraged to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for their journeys.
