Shortly after 4pm yesterday emergency services were called out to a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a car and a truck on the A1 near to Causey Park in the Earsdon area of Northumberland.
It was reported that a grey BMW 5 Series car was travelling southbound, when for reasons yet to be established, it has collided with a white Merecedes Heavy Goods Vehicle which was travelling northbound.
Emergency services attended and the passenger of the BMW – a woman in her 50s – was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
A section of the A1 between the A697 junction and the Acklington junction was closed in both directions for ten hours, but the road has since reopened
Officers from Northumbria Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision – and have today appealed for witnesses to come forward.
They are especially keen to hear from anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision.
Sergeant Greg Huntley, of Northumbria Police, said: “Our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the woman who has sadly died in this tragic collision”.
“We will continue to offer them all the support they need and would ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”
Sgt Huntley added: “We are now appealing for further information and for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved, to come forward”.
“If you were travelling in either direction on the A1 around the time of this collision, any information you are able to provide could prove crucial to our enquiries.”
