Driver dies after car leaves A1 and overturns near Durham
The man was alone in his car when it hit a barrier and flipped
A driver has died following a crash on the A1(M) near Durham.
It happened just east of Durham, between Bowburn and Carrville, shortly after 11:40pm on Saturday.
An Audi left the northbound carriageway of the motorway and collided with a roadside barrier, before overturning.
Emergency services attended, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was a man in his 40s and was the only person in the car.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A police investigation into the cause of the crash is under way, and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
