A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving following a high-speed chase that resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle in Wythenshawe on 16th June 2026.

The incident began when Cheshire Police alerted Greater Manchester officers to a stolen Mercedes CLC making its way into the region.

Officers from the Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit (TVIU) pursued the vehicle along Hollyhedge Road, where it was driven at speeds exceeding 100mph and through red traffic lights.

Pursuit details

Before the pursuit reached its conclusion, the driver narrowly avoided colliding with an innocent pedestrian. The chase ended when the Mercedes crashed into a tree on Haveley Road in Benchill after turning onto Fancroft Road.

The driver fled the scene but was swiftly detained by officers. He remains in custody for further questioning.

Inspector Tony Allt from GMP's TVIU commented on the operation, saying: “This was a high-speed and potentially dangerous incident which almost saw an innocent member of the public injured while out on the street.”

Inter-force collaboration

The operation showcased effective collaboration between Greater Manchester Police and Cheshire Police, enabling them to act promptly on information and apprehend the suspect within hours.

Inspector Allt added: “Our collaborative work with other forces that we are linked with was clear to see last night, we acted upon Cheshire’s information and arrested the suspect all within a few hours.”

The successful arrest demonstrates GMP's commitment to enforcing the law and ensuring public safety, as the suspect remains in custody, facing charges of burglary and dangerous driving.
