Woman arrested on suspicion of arson over Dovestone fires
Police say the investigation into the Saddleworth blaze remains live
A 20-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with the Dovestone moorland fires.
Greater Manchester Police say their Neighbourhood Policing Team made the arrest on the afternoon of 13th July.
She remains in custody for questioning.
Fires began on Saturday
The moorland fires at Dovestones began on Saturday 11th July, shortly after 8.30pm.
Firefighters from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been working to contain the blaze in what police describe as extremely challenging conditions, with strong winds adding to the difficulty.
Police appeal over social media speculation
Detective Inspector Andrew Day, of Oldham CID, said: "We are aware of social media posts circulating regarding this incident and would like to stress that this is a live police investigation. We would encourage people stop speculating regarding this and if you do have information, please report it to ourselves."
Saddleworth Neighbourhood Sergeant Andy Holian thanked the emergency services involved, saying: "Officers would like to thank all emergency services who have dealt with and continue to deal with this incident.
In particular, our colleagues at Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters have been working tirelessly in extremely challenging conditions to contain the fire and prevent further spread, with strong winds adding to an already difficult situation.
They are putting themselves at risk to protect our communities, the environment and local wildlife, and they deserve our utmost respect and support."
Road closures remain in place
Holmfirth Road and Bank Lane remain closed, with no access to Dovestone Reservoir.
Police are asking people to avoid the affected areas so emergency services can continue their work safely.
