Wigan sergeant Carl Beck honoured nationally for bravery involving knife incident

Sergeant praised for courageous actions and leadership

Police Sergeant Carl Beck of Wigan has been recognized nationally by the Police Federation for his bravery during a knife incident in July 2024. Beck had previously been awarded the 2025 Chief Constable’s Bravery Award by Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for his exemplary actions.

Courageous intervention

Arriving at the scene of a stabbing on Market Street, Beck encountered an offender armed with a knife. He calmly deployed his Taser, neutralizing the threat and preventing further harm. His swift decision-making and courage has now earned him national recognition for bravery.

Commitment to team welfare

PS Beck emphasized the importance of supporting both physical and mental health in response policing.

“I became a police officer because I wanted to make a real difference and help keep my community safe," Beck stated. He highlighted the need for his team to feel supported, particularly when dealing with distressing situations.

Recognition from leadership

Chief Constable Sir Stephen Watson praised Beck’s bravery, calling him an inspiring example: “In the face of peril, he showed immense courage...PS Carl Beck sets a terrific and inspiring example for all of us across the force."

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Boyle, National Lead for Response Policing, commended Beck’s professionalism and composure, noting his actions prevented more serious harm.

Wigan District Commander, Chief Superintendent Clare Jenkins, and Greater Manchester Police Federation Chair Mike Peake, echoed sentiments of gratitude for Beck's selflessness and courage.
